I am reminded of the lengths to which my wife and I went to protect our children when they were young. In chapter 7, Paul addressed questions that the Corinthian Christians had asked about marriage (7:1). He is talking about someone who is going to be damaged by it, and so the third thing he says is, "Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall." But here Paul accommodates, in a sense, to the pagan view of gods by pointing out that the Father represents the wholeness of God, and Jesus is Lord -- he who became a man and came among us as distinct from Caesar who was the Lord of the Roman world.
